Lifting Hooks vs Lifting Straps: Which Do You Need?

Your grip is failing before your back does. That is not a grip problem. That is a tool problem.

Lifting hooks and lifting straps both solve it. They do not solve it the same way. Knowing the difference determines which one belongs in your bag.

Hooks

A metal hook clips under your palm and locks around the bar. When you pull, the hook holds — not your hands. Setup takes three seconds. You do not wrap, you do not thread, you just pull.

The connection is fixed. The bar is not going anywhere. For deadlifts, heavy rows, shrugs, weighted pull-ups — anything where you want grip completely removed from the equation — hooks are the answer.

The tradeoff: they are not versatile. The hook dictates the grip position. For exercises with varied bar angles or where you need to release quickly mid-set, hooks are not the right tool.

Straps

Straps wrap around your wrist and around the bar. Friction does the work. Your hand still contacts the bar — you still feel the lift — but the grip demand drops significantly.

They work across more exercises than hooks. Romanian deadlifts, dumbbell rows, cable work, lat pulldowns — straps cross over where hooks cannot. The setup takes longer per set, but the range of application is broader.

If you are pulling near-maximal loads and want a connection that cannot slip under any circumstance, figure 8 straps are the step up from standard straps. They loop around both wrist and bar and lock tighter the harder you pull.

Which One

Most serious lifters end up with both. But if you are choosing one to start:

If your training is built around heavy compound pulls and you want the fastest, most secure setup — get hooks.

If you train a wide variety of pulling movements and want one accessory that works across all of them — get straps.

If you are chasing a deadlift PR and need a connection you can trust at maximum load — get figure 8s.
