How to Build a Complete Gym Bag: What Every Serious Australian Lifter Carries

What is in your gym bag says a lot about how seriously you train.

Not in an aesthetic sense. In a practical one. The athletes who consistently perform their best sessions are prepared for them. They do not arrive hoping the equipment works out. They bring what they need and they know why each item is there.

Here is what belongs in a serious gym bag — and why.

Grip Accessory

One. Choose the right one for how you train and use it consistently.

If your training is built around heavy compound pulling — deadlifts, rows, shrugs — lifting hooks belong in your bag. Fast to set up, secure connection, grip removed as a variable on your hardest sets.

If you train a wider variety of pulling movements and want one tool that crosses over effectively, lifting straps are more versatile. Wrap and go.

If you are regularly pulling near-maximal loads and need a connection that will not slip under any circumstance, add figure 8 straps specifically for those sets.

If palm protection matters alongside moderate bar work, lifting grips do the job without the downsides of gloves.

Most serious lifters carry two of these. Hooks or figure 8s for heavy days. Straps or grips for everything else.

Gym Towel

Non-negotiable. Sweaty hands on a bar you are not strapped into is a grip problem you did not need. A microfibre gym towel between sets is one of those small details that adds up across a long session. It also keeps equipment clean, which matters if you share a gym with other people.

Shaker Bottle

Pre and intra-workout nutrition is only useful if it is mixed properly and accessible during the session. A shaker that actually mixes — metal whisk ball, leak-proof lid — removes one small friction point that accumulates across hundreds of sessions.

Something to Carry It In

A gym accessories pouch keeps hooks, straps, and towel in one place rather than scattered across the bottom of a bag. Small detail. High practical value when you are moving through a session and do not want to root around for your straps between sets.

What Does Not Belong

Gear you bought but do not use. Gym gloves you wear out of habit rather than because they help. A phone you check between every set.

The gym bag is a preparation tool. Every item in it should have a reason to be there. If you cannot answer why something is in the bag, take it out.
