The Complete Guide to Gym Accessories in Australia

Most people buy too much gym gear too early. They fill a bag with accessories they saw online, use two of them regularly, and let the rest collect chalk dust.

Here is what Australian lifters actually need — and what you can skip until you genuinely need it.

Start With Grip

Before a belt. Before knee sleeves. Before anything else — sort out your grip.

Grip is the limiting factor in most pulling movements for most lifters. Fix that first and your back training, your deadlift, your rows all improve immediately. Nothing else gives you that kind of return that fast.

The right choice depends on how you train:

Lifting Hooks — fastest setup, most secure connection. Clip on and pull. Best for heavy deadlifts, rows, and shrugs where you want grip completely out of the picture.

Lifting Straps — more versatile. Work across a wider range of exercises. Better if your training involves a lot of variation in pulling movements.

Figure 8 Straps — for maximum loads. When standard straps feel uncertain at 95% of your max, these do not.

Lifting Grips — palm protection without the bulk of gloves. Good for moderate weights, pull-ups, and anyone who wants bar feel alongside protection.

Start with one. Be honest about what your training actually demands.

Then a Belt

A belt earns its place when your compound lifts are heavy enough that spinal loading becomes a genuine consideration. That is roughly 1.5 times bodyweight on your deadlift and squat for most people.

Before that point, train without one. Build the bracing strength the belt is supposed to amplify. A belt worn too early becomes a substitute for core strength, not a tool that enhances it.

The Supporting Cast

A gym towel matters more than most lifters admit. Sweaty hands on a bar you are not strapping into is a grip problem you do not need. A microfibre towel between sets is a small detail that adds up across a long session.

A shaker bottle that actually mixes properly. Not complicated, but the difference between a good one and a bad one is a clump of protein in your teeth after every session.

What to Skip

Gym gloves. They add bulk, reduce bar feedback, and perform worse than grips or straps on any heavy pull. If palm protection is the goal, grips do it better.

Wrist wraps for every exercise. They have a legitimate place in heavy overhead pressing and bench for lifters with existing wrist issues. Wearing them for everything prevents the wrist from building the stability it needs under moderate load.

Compression everything. Recovery gear has its place. It is not the first thing you buy.

The Principle

Buy what you need for where you are right now. Not what you think you will need eventually. The right accessory at the right time changes how you train. The wrong one just takes up space.
